Deciding well when everything is changing at once

Big transitions scramble judgement. A few simple anchors keep you steady.

A new job, a move, a relationship beginning or ending, a loss, a windfall - big transitions tend to arrive with a pile of decisions attached. And they're the worst possible time to make them, because the ground you'd normally stand on to decide is the very thing that's shifting.

Why transitions scramble judgement

During a transition, your routines, your sense of identity and your usual reference points are all in flux at once. Everything feels urgent, and it's genuinely hard to tell which decisions truly are. That combination pushes people into choices they later wish they'd slept on.

Anchor 1: separate the urgent from the merely loud

Very few decisions in a transition actually have to be made today. Write them all down, then mark only the ones with real deadlines. Most of the noise can wait - and waiting is often the most powerful move available to you.

Anchor 2: borrow stability from outside

When your own footing is unsteady, an impartial person who already understands your situation becomes disproportionately valuable - not to decide for you, but to hold the context steady while you think. It's one of the main reasons clients keep an ongoing advisor through life's bigger turns.

Anchor 3: decide in pencil

Where you can, make reversible moves and revisit them once the dust settles. Treat early decisions as drafts, not verdicts. Clarity returns - it always does - and you want to have kept your options open until it does.

Transitions end. The decisions you make during them can outlast the turbulence by years, so the kindest thing you can do for your future self is to decide slowly, lean on steady help, and keep as many doors open as you reasonably can.
